MINUTE entry before the Honorable Jorge L. Alonso: Upon review of Plaintiff's complaint, motion for temporary restraining order, motion for preliminary injunction, and supporting documents, the Court sua sponte raises the issue of whether these 57 defendants can be properly joined in this single action under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 20. See Tang v. Partnerships & Unincorporated Associations Identified on Schedule A, No. 23 C 4587, 2024 WL 68332, at *3 (N.D. Ill. Jan. 4, 2024); Roadget Bus. Pte. Ltd. v. Individuals, Corps., Ltd. Liab. Companies, Partnerships, & Unincorporated Associations Identified on Schedule A Hereto, No. 23 C 17036, 2024 WL 1858592, at *6 (N.D. Ill. Apr. 29, 2024); Viking Arm AS v. Partnerships & Unincorporated Associations Identified on Schedule A, No. 1:24-cv-1566, 2024 WL 2953105, at *3 (N.D. Ill. June 6, 2024). In particular, the Court is concerned about the wide variation among the products Defendants are alleged to have sold. See Anagram Int'l, LLC v. P'ships & Unincorporated Ass'ns Identified on Schedule A, No. 1:24-cv-12194, 2025 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 43230, at *9 (N.D. Ill. Feb. 21, 2025). By 8/5/26, Plaintiff must file a supplemental memorandum addressing the propriety of joinder in light of the principles set forth in the above-cited cases, especially Anagram International, 2025 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 43230, at *9, and like decisions. In the alternative, Plaintiff has leave to file an amended complaint by 8/5/26 with a smaller subset of defendants, along with a memorandum explaining why that smaller subset of defendants is properly joined. The pending motion [31] is entered and continued. The motion hearing noticed for 7/22/26 is stricken and re-set for telephonic motion hearing on 8/12/26 at 9:30 a.m. Members of the public and media will be able to call in to listen to this hearing. MINUTE entry before the Honorable Jorge L. Alonso: Plaintiff's ex parte motions [2], [14] are granted, and no appearance is necessary. The plaintiff's written submissions establish that if defendants were informed of this proceeding before a TRO could issue, assets would likely be redirected, defeating plaintiff's interests in identifying defendants, stopping the infringement, and obtaining an accounting. In addition, the submitted evidence establishes a likelihood of success on the merits, the harm to plaintiff is irreparable and an injunction is in the public interest because infringement interferes with the plaintiff's ability to control its intellectual property. Those rights cannot be fully compensated by money damages. There is no countervailing harm to defendants from an order directing them to stop infringement. Expedited discovery is warranted to identify defendants and implement the asset freeze. If any defendant were to appear and object, the court will take a fresh look at the asset freeze, joinder, and personal jurisdiction. The court finds that security in the amount of $1,000 per defendant is sufficient to secure the injunctive relief. Motion hearing set for 6/25/26 is stricken. Notice mailed by Judge's staff
